Just like working in an office, you can be “that” guy
Even though there are many differences between working in a standard office and a CoWorking space, there are many things that cross cultures. Being a good coworker…
Be conscious of your noise levels
Granted, most CoWorking spaces may not be as quiet as some offices that you may be used to, but within the CoWorking spaces you should still try to be as quiet as you can.
- Keep your music, if you listen to it, down very low or wear headphones.
- If you get or make a very quick phone call just keep it low.
- If it’s going to be a longer discussion, at least leave the room (unless it’s a private room) so you don’t disturb others.
Be respectful of community spaces
Many CoWorking spaces have some form of community spaces such as meeting rooms or conference rooms.
- Do not just sit in a meeting room all day for privacy
- If you really must use it for privacy and someone else needs it for a meeting, graciously step out.
- If you did book a room and your client cancels, remember to cancel your booking so that someone else may be able to make use of it.
- Don’t hog rooms. When your time is up, wrap up what you’re doing so the next person can use the room.
Keep it clean
Whether it’s your desk area, a kitchen or a community space, keep it clean (unless your rental fee includes some form of cleaning service) so that the next person who gets there can get right to work or right to making their meal, coffee, etc.
Keeping your own space neat and clean can also help you to be more productive by cutting down the time it takes to find files and other important paperwork.
Be social
Just like in a standard office space, being sociable can help you in the long run.
- Don’t interrupt others when they are clearly working
- Don’t keep them for long periods of time, no more than 5 minute for any interruption
- Do chat during breaks
- Do help if someone has a question that you may be able to help with
- Do set up a meeting if an in depth conversation is needed
- Do have some fun conversations about hobbies, interests, etc.
Don’t hog the shared printer
The printer is not the only item people take advantage of:
- If your space offers a gym, don’t hog the treadmill and other equipment
- Don’t hog the WiFi. Sure, the WiFi may be super-fast, but if you’re downloading multiple huge files from the internet… you’re going to bog down the WiFi
- Rooms like conference rooms and such.
Miscellaneous tips:
- Don’t change the heat or air conditioning settings without permission. Wear a jacket, or take your jacket off instead.
- Avoid profanities and inappropriate language. Even if you’re surrounded by men from the military or truckers. You never know who will be offended by what.
- No slamming of doors.
- Don’t intrude on the space of others. If you’re at a shared table, don’t spread your mess into others’ workspaces.
- Return any supplies you borrow from other coworkers or the coworking space itself.
- Odors – Good or Bad: Manage your smell. Don’t go too crazy on the cologne or perfume. Also, if at all possible, take a shower after your mid-day exercise routine.
